The term "Navarasa" derives from the Sanskrit words "Nava" meaning nine and "Rasa" meaning emotions. These emotions are essential for the portrayal of various characters and themes in traditional art forms like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathakali, among others.
The nine rasas embody different human emotions, including love (shringara), laughter (hasya), sorrow (karuna), anger (roudra), energy (veera), fear (bhayanaka), disgust (bibhatsa), wonder (adbhuta), and peace (shanta). Each rasa has a distinctive facial expression, bodily posture, and color association, allowing artists to convey a wide range of feelings and sentiments through their performances, deepening the connection with the audience.
